Our summer camping tour 2011 - #1

First stop, Gull Lake Recreation Area...

Back from camping at noon today.  Had a great time under the stars Friday and Saturday.  The Budahn/Bowman clan were there too and we solved a few of the world's problems around the campfire in the evenings.  There are still many problems in the world, so more campfires are needed.

The only casualty this weekend was when Ava (accidentally) slammed Neil's finger in the car door.  He's a tough little bugger, though.  A few tears were shed, but he was none the worse for wear a couple minutes later... and his finger was pinched but good.  He either has a high tolerance for pain or he hasn't learned how to milk it yet.  I'm not sure which.

Anyway, we went for Zobarz pizza Friday night (yeah, I know... really roughing it, right?) and the kids made S'mores in the evening.

On Saturday we didn't really have any plans, just sort of improvised.  We played at the playground for a while and then went down to the beach.  The water at Gull Lake is very high.  Just a sliver of beach is all that was there; the rest of it was under water.  Still, it was a beautiful day - although a little cool - but the beach sounded good.

We gave the kids instructions that they could get their feet wet, but that's all.  As you can tell by the pictures, that didn't last too long.

I like to call this one "Monkey see, monkey do"

You can't tell from the picture, but her overalls are soaked - "just get your feet wet."  Yeah, whatever.

Neil was shivering here, but we had to drag him out of the water!

Ava managed to make lots of friends at the campground.  She had to say hi to every single person walking by our site.  We finally had to talk to her about the whole "stranger danger" thing, which is a sad reality in our world.  One elderly man who was walking by stopped after Ava waved at him and said hi.  He made wood carvings and had just finished making a wizard.  He actually gave the carving to her... which I'm sure was an act of considerable kindness, but still the protective side of me was a little leery of it (isn't it awful how jaded and suspicious we've become as people?).  She thought it was pretty awesome:

So our first camping trip of the year was a success.  There are a few mosquito bites, a wee bit of sunburn, and a badly pinched finger, but all-in-all, the kids can't wait to go again.

Next stop on our summer camping tour:  Two Rivers Campground with the Budahn family.  Can't wait!

We gave Neil his pacifier, usually reserved for bed time only.... otherwise he was stuffing rocks in his mouth.  He is 100% pure boy.
