And another one's gone...

I've been watching a little news today.  The demise of Colonel Moammar Gaddafi Gadhaffi Qaddafi ...or however you spell his name... has finally come to fruition.  Yet another dictator has bit the dust.  It interests me because it will certainly be recorded in the history books - Colonel Gaddafi Gadhaffi Qaddafi ruled Lybia for 42 years.  A total megalomaniac.

But why did he remain a Colonel?  You would've thought he would have promoted himself to General of the Army or Ruler of All Mankind or something.  I've always wondered about that.

But anyway, I haven't been "tuned in" to the news as much as I normally would be simply because I find these news channels - namely the personalities of these news channels - very hard to watch.  I can't stand their faux concern, their calculated facial gestures.  The whole damn thing is nothing more than an orchestrated stage show under the guise of "news."

However, good ol' Wolf Blitzer of CNN gave me the chuckle of the day.  When "dramatic new images" came into CNN of a bloodied Colonel Gaddafi Gadhaffi Qaddafi being escorted (walking) to a truck, Blitzer made the astonishing observation that "it appears that Gaddafi is still alive in these images."

No shit, Wolf.  The dude is walking.

Another eye-rolling moment was found on CNN's web site.  CNN pondered if these "dramatic new images" were too "violent and graphic" for television.

Seriously?  And the Zapruder film is okay?

First, I don't think anything is too violent or graphic for our callus society anymore.  We Americans have seen it all and nothing phases us.  In fact, we demand more.  The bloodier the better.

Second, if this was CNN's main concern, why the hell are they showing these "dramatic new images" in the first place?!  (Because they know Fox News will, that's why... and if they don't, NBC or CBS or ABC will).

But that's "news" these days.  Gone are the days of David Brinkley and John Chancellor and Walter Cronkite.  These are the newsmen of my youth and somehow they brought a sort of dignity to current events.  Now, it's just a stageshow complete with dramatic theme music, awesome graphics and coached-up beautiful people reading off teleprompters.

But that doesn't change the fact that another bad guy has bit the dust.

Only to be replaced, in all likelihood, by another bad guy.

Guess all we can do is wait and see.
